Dear Friends,
"No matter when you adopt a giving lifestyle, your well-being will improve. Generous behavior is closely associated with reduced risk of illness and mortality and lower rates of depression. Even more remarkable giving is linked to traits that under gird a successful life, such as social competence, empathy and positive emotion."
- Why Good Things Happen to Good People, by Stephen Post, PhD, and Jill Neimark
Giving and getting support - whether it is spending time or money - benefits not only the receiver, but also the donor. Each time our volunteers go to Phoenix House, Odyssey House or the Veritas Therapeutic Community, they have an opportunity to give their support to the women residents participating in The Circle of Women program by sharing goals and dreams. In turn, they receive support for their own lives.
What would happen if every woman received this level of support? How many fewer or us would stand for unhealthy relationships that lead to domestic violence, drug abuse and homelessness? How many more of us could shepherd our families and communities into strength and productivity?
In October, we were asked to speak at the graduation ceremony for the men and women at the Veritas Therapeutic Community in New York City. We were chosen both by the facility and the residents we serve. Our eleven years of work with this outstanding community and the courageous women who have completed their recovery is the result of supportive relationships.
Thank you for your support of A More Perfect Union and for your donations that allow us to bring our important work to the women we serve. Whether you are a long time supporter or just getting to know us, we look forward to bringing you into our circle of support - for you, for families and for our communities.

Learning to Get the Support You Need
Receiving is just as important as giving. Accepting support can add value to many aspects of our lives, including relationships, career, health, creativity and finances. However, often we hold the belief that it's more significant to give support than to receive it. Why is that?

Inside Our Program
Imagine a dozen women sitting in a circle, sharing experiences, laughing, listening, sometimes crying. Now imagine half of the women are recovering substance abusers, preparing to reenter society, while the other half are women not in recovery, but still have common experiences as mothers, daughters, sisters, workers, best friends, and dreamers...

Our Growing Organization
Each year, A More Perfect Union invites women interested in volunteering the opportunity to participate in our organization. What we ask of potential volunteers is simple: Come willing to commit with an open heart and an open mind. This August, we were pleased to have seventeen new volunteers join us in the work we do through The Circle of Women program.
